what is your everest?

September 25, 2007

So today was boat abandonment drill. Exciting stuff.

But it was shortlived, literally cos it only lasted what, 5 minutes?

Anyway, after that it was back to work.

Today was a good day. Completed many tasks, and have set the pace and paved the way for other tasks that await my working on.

One of the things I did today was design a card for Edwin’s talk at Kinokuniya this Saturday.

Edwin? Yes. Edwin Siew.

36 years old.
Outward Bound Singapore Instructor.
Part of the Singapore Everest Team, and conquered Antartica’s highest mountain.

Amazing ain’t it.

I was sitting next to him in his office as we went through the photos that we could use for the card. After that I read up on him in the OBS 40th Anniversary commerative book, and was basically stumped, for lack of a better word.

It’s rather surreal sitting next to someone who has achieved something so great, and simply be humbled by the experience. Cliched, but he’s just like everyone else.

How many people can actually say: “Everest? Yeah I’ve been there. All the way up.”

In the write up by Edwin in the book, he said he always asks his charges when they’re on course with him, “What’s your Everest?” Cos he believes that if he can conquer Everest, he can do anything.

Sheesh, I talk as if I know him very well. I see him almost everyday, but I’ve only actually talked him today. And I’m glad I did.
